no, thank YOU George Stephenson

First, I would like to recognize and thank George Stephenson for his invention of the locomotive. What a man. Without this early 19th century invention, I would not be where I am today. literally.

Being a suburbanite commuting to and from the city, you get your pick of 2 forms of transportation: by car or by train. I choose the latter. Sans biking, the train has become my new favorite form of transportation. Thanks to the Metra, commuting to the city all week has become quite the enjoyable experience.

Life lessons learned from commuting:

1.using the revolving door is a skill which, sadly, some never acquire

2.If you find yourself lacking some z's and wanting to sneek in a snooze on the train, be conscious of snoring, drooling, and mumbling habits

3.when taking the seat next to someone on the train, limit your salutation to the person sharing the bench with you to a brief "hi"- if you deem it necessary to say anything at all.

4. find a friend to ride the train with- it's way more fun.

5. if you are late to catch a train, when the station is in sight it is acceptable to jog/sprint/mow others over to catch the train. may the wind be in your sails.

6. no, you can never walk too briskly on the sidewalks. yes, you can walk too slowly. lace up those athletic shoes. you're going to need them.

7. switch up the streets you take to and from work. you will learn the area and see new things. (and find at least three new dunkin' donuts)

8. three words: monthly train pass. buy it. love it.

9. when it comes to crosswalks, if other people are walking - no matter what the traffic signal- you can too. thank you, city of Chicago, for protecting our right as pedestrians *Chicago's new crosswalk law*

10. enjoy the walk - soak in your surroundings and pick out favorite intersections, signs, buildings, etc.

now go commute. the commute is your oyster.
